Topic: Placement of Rangers in ParksMr. Michael Roos, President May 20, 2003 Re: Placement of Rangers in parks Dear Mike, Peck Park is in disarray. It is the site of crime, vandalism, drug use, active homeless encampments, and other safety risks. Peck Park could be a local treasure. Instead, it is an eyesore. The Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council (NWSPNC) has placed the beautification and revitalization of Peck Park as its number one priority. We based this prioritization upon feedback from and surveys of our shareholders, of whom we represent more than 25,000. To that end, the NWSPNC has begun a process to make Peck Park what it could be: a beautiful natural resource, a safe place for families, and the pride of San Pedro. Before investing time, effort, and taxpayer dollars, the NWSPNC wants to be sure that its investment is protected. That means sufficient law enforcement patrols and oversight of the park. Currently, a Park Ranger patrols Peck Park only periodically other than locking up at night. The NWSPNC has been informed of discussions about removing that Park Ranger from his Peck Park patrol duties. A Park Ranger, patrolling less than once a day, is far from adequate. Removing even that minimal protection, however, would place any improvements to Peck Park at substantial risk of being destroyed. Attached is a resolution, passed unanimously by the NWSPNC. It urges, in the strongest possible terms, that the Park Ranger retain his duty to patrol Peck Park. It also states that additional law enforcement patrols are needed, and that the NWSPNC is examining how this might be accomplished. Please listen, as we have, to the collective voice of over 25,000 residents of the City of Los Angeles. Please keep our Park Ranger patrolling Peck Park. Sincerely, John Greenwood cc: Council Member Janice Hahn
