by Councilwoman Hahn Re: Amerigas - Presented August 17, 2004
Background:
Two large tanks on North Gaffey Street each hold up to 12 million
gallons of butane. Propane is also stored there in the smaller tanks.
The primary purpose of the Amerigas facility is to store butane which
is produced by Valero's Wilmington Refinery and British Petroleum's
Carson Refinery.
The butane currently goes by pipeline from Valero and BP to the North
Gaffey Facility where it is stored for later transport by pipeline to
Berth 120 for shipping overseas. Some of the butane is also returned
to the refineries for use in the winter months.
Ending the pipeline lease and access to Berth 120 would create a need
to find some new method of handling the excess butane.
