COMMENTS FROM COMMUNITY MEETING
on PECK PARK
The following is a summary of the comments collected at our community
meeting on August 7, 2003. There is not necessarily consensus on these
issues, but they were raised by one or more of those in attendance.

SUMMARY
MAINTENANCE ISSUES
- Clean and Maintain Peck Park Canyon
- Need dumpster at end of S. Herbert
- Need additional trash cans and they need to be affixed to the ground
- Need to keep trash cans emptied
- Place wood chips on trails
- Keep restrooms clean
- Graffiti
- Post Graffiti Hotline Number in Restrooms
- Dust
HEALTH, SAFETY and ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
- Need night patrols
- Get rid of homeless
- Keep out motorcycles/off-road vehicles/motorbikes
- Enforce off-leash dogs ordinance and put signs back up
- Require dog owners to clean up after them
- Get rid of wild cats
- Block cars from driving into the Park – end of S. Herbert
- Lack of specific crime data from Police – they don’t keep the statistics
specifically for the Park
- Rec and Parks has limited data
- Response time for Ranger
- Illegal dumping
- Need No Dumping signs
- Keep out the ramps for bicycles and skateboarders
SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS OF CANYON
- Install protective fencing so people can’t fall in
- Don’t fence the canyon except where necessary for safety reasons and
then use railings, not chain link fencing
- Remove chain link fencing by maintenance shop
- Keep the canyon pristine and don’t import animals into the canyon
- Improve the trails
"HERNANDEZ RANCH" AREA
- Restore passive use-light ranching, use similar to how Mr. Hernandez
used it
- Immediate need for brush clearance
- 4H has the potential to donate animals (there is a surplus of animals
at their Long Beach site) and volunteers to care for the animals; need
to address the safety of the animals
- Neighbors watch over the animals
- Leave fences and structures up if possible
OTHER
- Clarify what area is Peck Park and where the boundaries are
- Obtain a large blow up map of the Park
- Park staff should get more input from the neighbors
- Create a “Friends of Peck Park” to develop cadre of volunteers
- Involve Recreation and Parks Planning Section
- Focus on what we can do
- Post contact list on the web
- Master Plan should include a signage plan
- Is there a budget for Bandini and Upland Area?
- Enlist volunteers to help clean up
- Lack of responsiveness of Recreation and Parks to complaints
- Develop follow-through system for complaints
- Consider submitting request for additional staffing with justification
RECREATION AND PARKS AGREED TO…
At the meeting, representatives from the Department of Recreation and
Parks agreed to do the following:
- Provide additional staked down trash cans – they just need to know
how many and where they should be placed
- Immediately clear the brush from the “Hernandez Ranch” and surrounding
area
- Post the No Off-Leash Dog signs
