Port Cargo, Trucks Flowing Smoothly
2nd day of new Clean Trucks requirements brings clearer roadways
February 19, 2009
Truck traffic moved smoothly at the Port of Long Beach on Thursday, February 19, 2009, a day after the ports' Clean Trucks Program began using an electronic gate access system to check compliance and to collect a truck replacement fee.
There was no congestion Thursday, as more than 90 percent of the trucks entered terminals without a problem. However, traffic remained heavier than usual on Terminal Island, near the ports' Truck Tag Replacement Center.
On Wednesday, February 18, the first day of the new electric access system, about 80 percent of the trucks entered without trouble. But hundreds of trucks were turned away because they were not fully compliant with the Clean Trucks Program. Many of the trucks turned away lined up at the ports' Truck Tag Replacement Center on Terminal Island, seeking help.
The Clean Trucks Program at the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles is phasing out old, dirty trucks in favor of cleaner models, to reduce air pollution from port-related trucks by 80 percent by 2012. The program includes a fee that will be used to help finance replacement trucks.
